10 Things To Do When Feeling Down

Life has ups and downs, its the natural course of life. It won’t always be great and sometimes you can’t fake it. It’s okay to have an off day every so often, and on those days it’s good to do things to lift your spirit!

  1. Make Your Bed.

    It’s silly, and I know so many people say this, but its true! Having your bed done, even if you don’t plan on leaving the room, can work wonders for your mood. Chunk up chores into tiny little goals. Do your bed one hour and then the next maybe clear out your desk or put away the washing. Take it slow, and don’t beat yourself up about not feeling up to it! The important thing to keep in mind is that life will feel a bit more manageable after.

  2. Wash Your Face / Put On Makeup

    I always feel like something drug out of the swamp when I wake up first thing in the morning after a rough night, or when the day is immediately shitty. Wash your face with your favorite cleanser and put on your favorite minimal makeup look! It’s a great way to feel put together and face the day.

  3. Send A Gratitude Text

    I’ve done this for several years ever since I saw an awesome video on some random person’s Facebook wall about the #1 generator of human happiness: showing gratitude! It was such an eye-opener to me, and it really is true! Text a friend or loved one something that you appreciate about them, whether its for helping you clean your room that one time or just for being there for you. It’s a good way to feel better on the inside.

  4. Play A Feel-Good Playlist

    There’s no such thing as a guilty pleasure on a self-help day! Blast that Britney Spears! Jam to Backstreet Boys! Turn up the volume on every single One Direction song ever released. Hell, sometimes I just need to listen to Walking On Sunshine by Katrina & the Waves to feel good. Pretend you’re in an 80’s getting-over-that-boy montage and work it. You can even change through all the outfits in your wardrobe, nobody’s judging!

  5. Have A Seasonally Appropriate Snack

    I’ve always said that snacks shouldn’t be in a plastic bag for feel-good binges. It just brings on more bad feels eventually. Is it summer? Go for a fresh frappe or ice cream cone. Eat a watermelon and get sticky fingers! Wear sunglasses and enjoy the treat. Is it winter? Get a hot cocoa or coffee with warm pasties. Snuggle into a sweater knit and thaw out your insides.

  6. Quote-A-Thon Favorite Movies, Starring You

    Everyone has that movie that they know front to back, every line included. My favorite thing to do on shitty days is bust out the long-time favorite, never-gets-boring, Pride and Prejudice (2005). You can argue with me all you want, that movie is a work of art. I can watch it repeatedly, several times in one day, and never grow tired of it! On bad days, I love sitting down, watching, and saying the lines along with the actors on screen. There’s a strange sort of satisfaction in it.

  7. Write A Journal Entry

    This is a bit obvious, but journals really are good for reflection and meditation. Thinking about why you feel the way you do is cathartic. In the end you should feel a bit of relaxation, if only it being the knowledge that you know yourself a bit more. When I do this, I try to also write down goals that I have myself to try and get out of the rut. Maybe tomorrow I’ll set up a date with a friend, or I’ll go to the cinema alone and revel in enjoying the pleasure of my own company. It’s important to push yourself, and if that only happens in baby steps, it’s okay too.

  8. Spa Time

    The only crime in this is that I DON’T HAVE A TUB. It’s so frustrating, I’ve always wanted to experience Lush Bath Bombs and I’ve never been able to. Either way, spa time is vital for my own self-care. I usually start with a hair mask, then move on to face mask and new polish for my nails. Things change here and there according to the season or the mood (or the state of my skin at the time), but one thing always remains the same: there must be a candle involved.

  9. Bust Out The Moscato

    This obviously isn’t required, as it’s not exactly… healthy. But hey don’t judge me! Sometimes a glass of white wine is all I need to relax and de-stress. Just never rely on alcohol too much on bad days or it could lead to dangerously unhealthy habits. I love my white wine, but I try and space out the amount I drink for obvious reasons. Barefoot Sweet White Moscato remains a long time favorite.

  10. Go To Bed, Night Owl!

    Sleeping late on bad days is a problem for me. This usually happens because I tend to nap during the days I don’t want to be awake. I’ve been working to stop this habit! Waking up early really does do wonders for mood and mental health, and going to sleep early on a bad day ensures that you can start the next day on a fresh slate. Resist the napping urges!
